Clark County Information

The population of the county based on the 2010 census was 425,363 and the county seat is Vancouver. It was the first established county in Washington and named after William Clark of the Lewis Clark expedition. It was first founded in 1845 and the total area is 656 square miles. The county office holds several departments that devote their work in keeping everyone safe, and these are attorney, probation, Sheriff’s office, emergency management, and courthouse.

The Sheriff is Chuck E. Atkins and he is a 36-year old veteran of the Clark County Sheriff’s office. It is the responsibility of the Sheriff’s office to protect and safeguard the community by implementing and enforcing the law, improve public safety through solid correctional practices, and public service through effective civil process.

County courthouse

The Superior Court is the trial court that handles all felonies and civil suits that involve amounts more than $75,000. The superior court also handles jurisdiction in probate, adoption, competency, juvenile, and divorce cases. Aside from that, the Superior Court hears the appeals that come from District Court decisions and administrative hearing decisions.

The district court has limited jurisdiction and takes care of traffic infractions, criminal traffic citations, misdemeanors and even gross misdemeanors, civil cases lower than $100,000, small claims, and changes in names.
