Established in 1846, as of the 2010 census, the population in Hopkins County was 35,161. The county seat and largest community is Sulphur Springs. David Hopkins was an early settler in the area and the county’s namesake. Once known as the Dairy Capital of Texas, the industry declined in the late 1990s; however, several dairies are still located in the county. Sulphur Springs is home to the Southwest Dairy Museum and the Hopkins County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The county has a total area of 793 square miles.
