The county was settled in 1890 and the population estimated at 19,372 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Hereford and it is also the largest community. The total area of the county is 1,498 square miles. It is named for Erastus “Deaf” Smith, a partially deaf scout and soldier who served in the Texas Revolution and was the first to reach the Alamo after its fall.
