Important Jail Policies and Procedures:
Inmate Visitation at the Day County Detention Center is held on Tuesdays and Sundays from 2pm to 4pm. A visit is 20 minutes in length with no more than 3 visitors at a time.
All visitors need to sign in and present their photo ID. They are subject to a search as well. Personal belongings must be left in the vehicles or inside the office with the jail staff. They will not be allowed inside the visitation area.
Sex Offender Search and Lookup:
A person who has been found guilty of a sex offense such as rape, incest, and child pornography is considered a sex offender. The law demands that such an offender should provide his information to local law enforcement which must then be filed in the state sex offender registry and the national sex offender registry. Anyone can access the information on sex offenders in Day County by visiting the South Dakota Sex Offender Registry. Because some sex offenders do not register their information, some files in the registry may only contain last known addresses.
Bail and Bondsman
When charged with a crime, a person is required to post bail in order to get released from custody while awaiting trial. Bail is the money pledged to the court as part of the defendant’s guarantee that he will appear at his trial. It will be refunded once the trial is over minus some court fees. However, if the defendant does not show up as promised, he forfeits the money and a warrant for his arrest will be issued.
If the defendant lacks the funds for posting bail, he can pay a bondsman to do so on his behalf. The bondsman can sign a bond with the court that will enable the defendant to get released. This fee is set at 10% of the bail amount and cannot be refunded.
