Convicted sex offenders are required by law to register on the state sex offender database. The US Department of Justice compiles all the data from the state sex offender registries in a separate system, the National Sex Offender Registry. Individuals who wish to search for sex offenders in their area can use either database.

Sex offenders, as defined by law, are individuals who have been found guilty of a sex crime such as rape, sexual assault, child pornography, statutory rape, and incest. The definition of sex crimes under the law varies in every state. Some crimes that are not sexual in nature such as indecent exposure and public urination have classified the offender as a “sexual offender” and as such, is required to be listed in the registry.
