Ashe county was initially inhabited by Native American Cherokee, Shawnee and Creek tribes.  Ashe did not become part of North Carolina until 1785 and wasn’t recognized as a US county until 1799.  The county was named for Samuel Ashe, who was a Revolutionary patriot, Governor of North Carolina and a superior court judge.
