Sex Offender Search & Lookup
Federal law mandates that all sex offenders must have their information filed in the national sex offender database and state sex offender registry. A sex offender is an individual who has been found guilty of a crime involving sexual misconduct such as rape, child pornography, and prostitution. Residents of Saratoga County can visit the Sheriff’s Alert page to locate any sex offenders living in their neighborhood. Keep in mind that the accuracy of the information listed in the database cannot be guaranteed as 100% accurate because some sex offenders do not register their information. You may find that some records will only show last known addresses of offenders.
Bail and Bail Bond Agents
The money placed in the court’s keeping in exchange for the temporary release of a defendant from jail while awaiting trial is known as bail. The court will use this money to secure the defendant’s return to court once the trial begins. After the trial, or if the case is dismissed, the defendant will be refunded his money back minus a 3% administrative fee. If he misses a court appearance, the money will be forfeited and a warrant will be issued for the arrest of the defendant. If bail is not paid for any reason, the defendant must stay in jail as long as the case is being tried in court.
To post bail, an individual must provide the exact amount because New York courts do not provide change. However, they can use several forms of payment in one transaction to pay the bail. The acceptable forms of payment are:
If a defendant cannot afford the bail, he can pay a bond fee to a bond agent who will secure his release. Bond agents are regulated by the New York State Insurance Department; their fees have been placed in a tiered system. The calculation of fees is as follows:
A $200 bond or less costs a fee of $10
A $3000 bond or less costs a fee equal to 10% of the bond
If the bond amount is $3001 to $10000, the fee is equal to 10% for the $3000 of the amount and the rest has a 8% fee.
If the bond is more than $10,000, the fee is calculated in the following manner: the first $3000 has a 10% fee + the amount between $3000 and $10000 has a fee of 8% + the remaining balance has a fee of 6%.
Here’s an example:
A bond set at $15,000 has a $1,160 fee that you get by following this equation: $3,000*10% + $7,000*8% + $5,000*6%.
