These changes must be file in the state sex offender registry and the national sex offender registry. A sex offender is defined as a person who has been convicted of a crime involving sexual misconduct. To locate sex offenders in Franklin County, residents can check the Sheriff Alert page. Some offenders do not comply with the registration law so you may encounter records that only have last known addresses.

Bail and Bail Bond Agents:

Bail is the amount of money or bond that is paid to the court in exchange for the temporary release of a pretrial inmate. The court will use the bail to ensure that the defendant will fulfill all of his court obligations. The court will then return the bail minus a 3% administrative fee after the trial. If the defendant misses a court appearance, then the bail is forfeited and a warrant is issued for his arrest. If bail is not paid, the defendant must stay in jail until the case is over/dismissed or he is released.

The courts of New York require payment in the exact amount. They do not provide change. However, they allow multiple modes of payment in one transaction. The following are the acceptable forms of payment:

  • US Cash
  • Cashier’s Checks (the amount should be not more than the bail)
  • Debit Card
  • Credit Card (includes an 8% processing fee)
  • Money Order from Western Union or banks (the amount of each order should not be more than $1000, multiple orders allowed)
A defendant can hire a bond agent to bail him out of jail. He will have to pay a bond fee which is non-refundable. The New York State Insurance Department regulates bond agents and have set their fees in a tiered system. You can easily calculate the bond fees using the system below:
A bond of $200 or less has a fee of $10.
A bond of $3000 or less has a fee equal to 10% of the bail.
A bond of $3001 to $10000 has a fee equal to 10% of the first $3000, 8% of the remaining bail amount.
A bond of $10000 has a fee equal to 10% of the first $3000, 8% of the amount between $3000 to $10000, and 6% of the remaining amount.
    To get the bond fee for a $15000 bond, just follow this formula: (10% x $3000) + (8% x $7000) + (6% x $5000) = $1160.
