Bail and Bondsman

A pretrial inmate is allowed to remain out of jail as long as his bail has been paid. Bail is the money required by the court that will be used to ensure the defendant will show up in court once the trial begins. The money is refunded to him minus any court fees once the trial is over as long as he never misses a court date. If he does, bail is revoked and forfeited.

If a pretrial inmate is financially unable to post bail, a bondsman can be hired to act as a surety. The services of a bondsman typically costs 10% of the bail amount. However, unlike bail, this payment is non-refundable.
