Chouteau County is located in the north-central part of Montana. Its county seat is Fort Benton. The county was formed in 1865, along the rest of the nine original counties in Montana and named in honor of Pierre Chouteau Jr. in 1882, a fur trader who set Fort Benton as a trading post.
