Becker County is located in the state of Minnesota. Named after George Loomis Becker, the county was formed in March 18, 1858 and its county seat is Detroit Lakes. Becker County Recorder Information

The Becker County Recorder is the custodian of all real estate records in Becker County.

The Recorder also processes requests for any certified copies of vital records. This office also serves as a Passport Agent for the US Dept. of State Passport Services. They take professional passport photos for a fee. They also handle your simple research requests or assist you with more difficult research.

Birth Certificate

To obtain a Certified Copy of a Minnesota Birth Certificate:

If you were born in Minnesota from 1935 to the present:

Your birth certificate is on a statewide vital statistics system through the Minnesota Department of Health located in their office.

If you were born before 1935:

You will need to obtain a certified copy from the county in which you were born or the county where your mother resided at the time of your birth. Please contact them to see if they can help expedite the process for you.

To obtain a certified copy in person:

You may appear in person at the Vital Statistic Department nearest you in the State of Minnesota. You may call the facility to make sure your name is on the State Vital Statistics System.

When you arrive you will need to complete a Birth Certificate Application Form and present valid photo identification such as your driver’s license. (A Birth Certificate Application Form is a form certifying your right to the copy.)

The fee will be $26.00 for the first copy and $19.00 for each additional copy requested for the same record.

Death Certificate

To obtain a Certified Copy of a Minnesota Death Certificate:

If the person died in Minnesota between 01/01/1997 and the present:

The death certificate is on a statewide vital statistics system through the Minnesota Department of Health located in their office.

If the person died in Minnesota before 01/01/1997:

You will need to obtain a certified copy from the county in which they died or the county where they resided at the time of death.

To obtain a certified copy in person:

You may appear in person at the Vital Statistics Department nearest you in the State of Minnesota. You may call the facility to make sure the name is on the State Vital Statistics System.

When you arrive you will need to complete a Certificate of Death Application Form and present valid photo identification such as your driver’s license. (A Certificate of Death Application Form certifies your right to a copy of the death certificate for that person.)

The fee will be $13.00 for the first copy and $6.00 for each additional copy requested for the same record.

Marriage License Applications

A marriage license must be applied for in person at the Becker County Recorder’s Office. Applicants do not need to be Becker County residents. Both parties need to be present to complete the application. You must provide the following information for each party:

  • Full name – before and after marriage
  • Address – before and after marriage
  • Age
  • County of residence
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Social Security Number

If previously married, applicants will list the date the last marriage was terminated, county, and state. If by divorce, applicants will also list the type of court. If the marriage ended by death, applicants will list the date of the death.

The license may be used anywhere in Minnesota. The license shall be valid for a period of six months.

The application fee is $115. The fee for parties who have completed at least 12 hours of premarital education is $40 (parties must submit statement at time of application per Minnesota Statute, section 517.08). The fee is payable to the Becker County Recorder and can be paid by cash, check, money order or card (2.5% convenience fee applies to card payments).

Becker County Assessor Information

The Becker County Assessor is appointed by the County Board of Commissioners and approved by the Minnesota Commissioner of Revenue. He/she supervises the property assessments of all townships and cities within the county. The property assessments are made by State accredited and certified appraisal staff from the county office and by State certified assessors hired by townships and cities.
