Bail and Bondsman

Bail is the money pledged by a defendant to the court in order to be allowed to stay out of jail while awaiting trial. The court will hold onto the money during the entire trial to increase the probability of the defendant fulfilling all his court obligations. If the defendant fails to show up as promised, the money is forfeited.

If a lack of funds is preventing the defendant from posting bail, he can acquire the services of a bondsman for only 10% of the bail amount.  This payment ensures that the bondsman will post bail on behalf of the defendant and secure the release of the defendant.
