Sex Offender Search and Lookup:
Sex offenders are ordered by the law to have their information recorded in the national and state sex offender registries for the purpose of public safety and awareness. In general, the classification of sex offender is for criminals who have been convicted of a sexually motivated crime such as rape, molestation, and prostitution. Kentucky has a registry of sex offenders that the public can access here. It is important to note that the state cannot guarantee that all the information in the registry is accurate or complete. There may be times that the search results produced contain last known addresses of offenders instead of their current ones because these offenders may have failed to register their information.
Bail and Bondsman
Bail is the court’s written permission that allows a defendant to secure his temporary release from jail while his trial is still pending. To post bail, some defendants need only sign the bond stating their promise to attend all court appearances that are required of him/her. For some crimes, the bond will also require the payment of money or property along with the promise of the defendant’s presence in court. Failure to keep this promise will mean the property or money will be forfeited.
Not all defendants can post bail because money can be an issue. For those individuals, hiring a bondsman is one option. A bondsman charges 10% of the bail amount in exchange for his promise to the court to be the one who will pay the entire bail amount if the defendant misses a court appearance. The fee charged is non-refundable.
Commercial bail bonds are prohibited in Kentucky. Ky. Stat. § 431.510 (outlawing commercial bail bond industry); see Stephens v. Bonding Assoc. of Kentucky, 538 S.W.2d 580 (Ky 1976) (upholding statute). A bondsman operating from another state may only arrest a fugitive who has run to Kentucky if he gets a warrant. Ky. Rev. Stat. § 440.270.
