Sex Offender Search and Lookup:

All sex offenders must notify the Sheriff’s Office of the county they live in so they can be registered in the state’s sex offender registry as well as in the Department of Justice’s national sex offender database. Sex offenders are classified as such because these are individuals who have been found guilty of committing a criminal offense involving sex such as sexual assault, child pornography, and sex trafficking. If you wish to discover if there are any sex offenders living in your neighborhood in Kentucky, you can access the data
online.

However, the public should keep in mind that the information is not always complete or accurate since some offenders may fail to obey the law. Some searches may only reveal an offender’s previous address while others may only show the neighborhood an offender lives in.

Bail and Bondsman

Bail is the court’s permission for the release of an inmate from jail while he waits for his trial to start under the condition that he will pledge money as a guarantee that he won’t be missing any of his required appearances. This is called bail. The money is forfeited should the inmate fail to meet this condition. In some cases where only partial payment is made, the defendant will be held liable for the rest of the bail amount.

A bondsman’s services is required if an inmate cannot post bail for financial reasons. In cases like this, the bondsman will be the one signing the court’s papers declaring that he will pay the entire bail amount if the defendant does not show up for his trial. The defendant will be charged a non-refundable fee by the bondsman which is usually 8-10% of the bail amount.

Kentucky has outlawed the commercial bail bond industry. Ky. Stat. § 431.510 (outlawing commercial bail bond industry); see Stephens v. Bonding Assoc. of Kentucky, 538 S.W.2d 580 (Ky 1976) (upholding statute). Bond agents from out of state must get a warrant before arresting a fugitive who has fled to Kentucky. Ky. Rev. Stat. § 440.270.
