White City was organized from Gallatin County in 1815 and was named for either Captain Leonard White o Captain Isaac White, a Gallatin County legislator who is credited with the idea of extending the Illinois-Wisconsin border a few miles north of the southern tip of Lake Michigan. He was killed in 1811a t the Battle of Tippecanoe.

The county has a total area of 502 square miles of which 7.1 square miles is water.

Important Jail Policies and Procedures

The White County Jail visitation is by appointment only. Visitation needs to be scheduled 24 hours in advance by calling the jail at 618-382-7149. Visits are 20 minutes each through a secure glass wall. Each inmate is permitted 2 visits per week. Visitors must be 18 years old or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Visitors must have government issued identification. No cell phones are allowed in the jail. Scheduled visits will not be rescheduled or extended.

Inmates have the ability to purchase phone time, candy, beverages, snacks, food items and general merchandise. Commissary is ordered on Tuesday before 10 pm and is delivered every Thursday.
