Rock Island County is located on the north western border of Illinois and bordered by the Mississippi River. The 2010 census listed a population of 147,546 in the county and the county seat is Rock Island. The largest city is Moline.

Rock Island County was formed in 1831 and is named for an island in the Mississippi River know known as Arsenal Island.

County Jail Overview

The Rock Island County Correctional Center has an annual jail population of over 10,000 inmates. The Criminal Justice Center was completed in 2001 and includes intercom systems, closed circuit television monitors, and courtroom electronics. The staff uses a digitized fingerprint system and a computerized mug shot system.

Working at the Rock Island County Jail or Sheriff’s Office

The Rock Island County Sheriff’s Merit Commission is responsible for maintaining an alphabetical list of qualified candidates. The list is established after candidates have completed a physical agility test and a written exam. A background investigation and oral interview will also be conducted.

Deputy Sheriff’s must be 21 years of age and complete a 12-week (480 hours) training at the Police Training Institute, which is followed by riding with a Field Training Officer for another fourteen weeks before being able to patrol on their own. A candidate who is twenty (20) years of age and possesses an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree in Law Enforcement, or related law enforcement field, and will attain his/her 21st birthday during the probationary period may qualify as eligible.
