Jefferson County is located in the southern part of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population of Jefferson County was 38,827. The county seat is Mount Vernon and the county is located in the portion of Illinois known as “Little Egypt.”

The jail is a medium custody jail and located at 911 E. Casey Avenue. It is used by multiple jurisdictions in the county for offenders who have short state sentences.
