Jefferson County is located in the southern part of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population of Jefferson County was 38,827. The county seat is Mount Vernon and the county is located in the portion of Illinois known as “Little Egypt.”

The county has a total area of 584 square miles of which 13 square miles is water. Jefferson County was organized in1819 and named in honor of Thomas Jefferson.
