Kern County

The population of the county according to the census in 2010 was 839,631 and the county seat is Bakersfield. The county was founded in 1866 and it is located at the southern end of Central Valley and the total area is 8,163. The county’s economy is tied to agriculture and petroleum extraction. There is also a strong aviation, space, and military presence, as evidenced by Edwards Air Force Base, China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station and Mojave Air and Space Port.  Kern is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States in terms of population growth, and suffers from significant water supply issues and poor air quality.
