Bail and Bondsman
Bail is the money pledged to the court in exchange for the temporary release of a pretrial inmate. The money will be held by the court until the end of the trial and returned to the defendant (minus fees and fines) if he fulfills all of his court obligations. If he doesn’t, the money is forfeited to the court.
A defendant who cannot afford the bail set by the court can secure the services of a bondsman to help him get released from custody. To hire one, you need to pay an upfront fee equal to 12% of the bail amount. This is non-refundable.
