Varner Unit, Lincoln County, Arkansas Overview

Varner Unit is located in Gould, Arkansas, and can hold 1,714 inmates. This prison also contains a Supermax Varner Unit, which houses death row inmates for the state. The facility opened in 1987, and the Supermax Unit was opened in 2000. This is a maximum-security prison. The facility offers a GED program, vocational training, and self-improvement programs.

Visitation Policies:

Inmates are responsible for notifying family and friends if they’ve been approved for visitation or denied. Each visitor is required to complete an application. The screening process can take 7 days or longer, and a criminal history check is done on each visitor. Minor children visitors must be accompanied by an approved adult visitor, unless they’ve been emancipated. Visitors ages 12 and older must have government identification. Visitors must agree to be searched and go through a metal detector.

Saturday and Sunday are designated visitation days. There is no additional visitation for holidays. Class I inmates are allowed weekly Sunday visits. Class II, III, and IV inmates are allowed two Saturday visits per month. Four visitors are allowed in a single visit.

Video visitation is also available, and can be done on-site or remotely. Visits are 30 minutes and must be scheduled 48 hours in advance. The cost is $12.99 for 30 minutes.
